A community group, the Vandergrift Parent Project, has raised about $500 to pay for a children’s vegetable garden and mural at Franklin Park.
The group will discuss the Franklin Park improvements as well as vandalism and bad behavior by unsupervised kids at borough parks during their regular monthly meeting on at 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Center, 262 Franklin Ave.
The Parent Project, which is in the process of applying for its nonprofit status, has been raising money to spruce up Franklin Park, where 50 to 100 children play daily, according to Shannon Visconti-Gourley of Vandergrift, co-founder of the group.
In addition, local Girl Scout troops have painted a bench and an old water fountain in the park.
The group now can pay for a small children’s vegetable garden and a mural, a 10 foot-by-20 foot scene from Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” at the Franklin Park bathroom building.
Volunteers are needed for the new projects during a work day on May 19 from 10 a.m. to about 4 p.m.
Visconti-Gourley said the group applied for grant for new playground equipment the park.
“It’s a long shot, but we’re just going to keep going for it,” she said.
