During a fire safety program in October 2021, Anthony Ferma, a New Kensington firefighter and custodian at Martin Elementary School, dons his full firefighting gear so children could see what he looks like with it on. Assistant Chief Matt Sobecki (upper right) wanted the students to see what a firefighter looks like so they would not be afraid should one appear at their homes. The New Kensington fire department is hosting its first fire safety day Saturday, Oct. 21, in honor of Sobecki, who died from cancer in May.
