Public infrastructure in New Kensington will get a boost after $1 million in grants was awarded last week to the city’s municipal authority.

The funding was part of $2.6 million awarded to Westmoreland County agencies for eight projects that will enhance water systems.

The money came through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.

In New Kensington, two $500,000 grants went to the city’s municipal authority. One is designated for replacement of the Seventh Street waterline. The other is earmarked for upgrades on Beamer Avenue, Fairmount Drive, Dugan Way and Wills Road.

“Water and sewer projects are an essential part of maintaining the health and safety of our communities, but often come with a high cost,” said state Sen. Joe Pittman, R-Indiana.

“This is a great day, as these projects will improve services to numerous Westmoreland County municipalities and local residents.”

Other municipalities also will receive money through the American Rescue Plan. They include:

• About $571,300 for the Municipal Authority of Washington Township for stormwater improvements along the Paulton area.

• About $424,500 for Derry Township to extend a water main within the township.

• About $346,500 for the Municipal Authority of Derry Borough for a waterline replacement in Derry Township.

State Rep. Jill Cooper, R-Murrysville, said local officials have to work hard to handle taxpayer funds while prioritizing infrastructure projects that improve the lives of area residents.

“Investments like these by the CFA provide an important helping hand to make these projects a reality,” Cooper said.

Separate grants were awarded through the Small Water and Sewer Program, with about $40,600 awarded to the Municipal Authority of Washington Township. Work will target a manhole rehabilitation project within the township.

Derry Township Municipal Authority received about $208,500 through the same program for upgrades to a sanitary sewage system in the township.

State Rep. Leslie Rossi, R-Unity, said the grants represent valuable investments in the region.

“Upgraded water systems are very important because it can prevent the spread of disease and protect the environment,” Rossi said.
