North Apollo goes for grant money to fix washouts of Hickory Nut Road

This week, Armstrong County officials went door to door to gather demographic information from residents on several streets in North Apollo to apply for a grant of nearly $6,000 to replace a catch basin on Hickory Nut Road.

The faulty storm sewer catch basin has caused stormwater to wash out parts of the road.

The catch basin protects about 19 acres of land and 40 properties from flash flooding, said Shane Michael, of Senate Engineering. The storm drain captures the water and sends it through the borough’s underground storm drain system to the Kiski River.

Hickory Nut Road washes out; the road is still driveable but has ruts.

“We want to get the storm drain back up where its feasible for residents to have better drainage on the road,” said Raymond Rusz, vice president of North Apollo Council.

Armstrong County representatives visited homes this week to drop off surveys and encourage residents along Hickory Nut Road, and Moore and Wilson avenues, to fill out household information. Income and other factors could help the borough land the grant money.

The borough needs to provide current estimates of the demographics in the service area to apply for the state grant, said Autumn Vorpe-Seyler, community development coordinator for the Armstrong County.

Additional details and a time line for the project are still pending.
