A charitable organization that has provided a range of social services to residents in the North Hills for the past 35 years is expanding its footprint to help needy families in the Alle-Kiski Valley.

North Hills Community Outreach, which operates out of three locations in the North Hills, has launched a program called “NHCO On The Go” to distribute fresh produce, packaged foods and meats.

The mobile service will be distributing food on the third Friday of each month at the following locations, with the next event planned for April 22 at the following locations:

• Noon to 1 p.m. — The Free Store, 756 Little Deer Creek Valley Road, West Deer

• 2 to 3 p.m. — Blawnox Municipal Building Fire Hall, 376 Freeport Road, Blawnox

• 10 to 11 a.m. — Bakerstown Alliance Church, 4030 Bakerstown Road, Richland

No identification or proof of income is required to obtain food.

“NHCO On the Go aims to increase the accessibility of the many services we offer, going into communities within our service area but geographically further away from the offices,” said Kelly King, who coordinates the organization’s food pantry services.

During the last fiscal year, 1,131 families used one of the organization’s three food pantries or received emergency food assistance, according to NHCO officials.

“We are focusing on fresh items like produce and meats because these items can be difficult to obtain for those with limited transportation,” she said.

Tom Baker, a former Allegheny County councilman who serves as the nonprofit organization’s executive director, said distributing food not only addresses the immediate needs people are experiencing, but can serve as a “conduit for conversations” about the range of services the organization provides.

In addition to food pantries, the organization offers help for senior citizen services, transportation assistance, utility and emergency aid, attorney assistance, help with education, free tax preparation and employment assistance.

The main office is in Shaler, with satellite offices in Millvale and Bellevue.
