Temporary barriers are installed along Route 28 near the Highland Park Bridge on Jan 18 as phase one of a long-term construction project began to install a third lane to relieve trafic congestion.

A busy last few months of road construction work on Route 28 continues this weekend.

PennDOT District 11 has announced work requiring a weekend crossover on Route 28 North will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

Northbound traffic will be crossed over into the southbound lanes for about a half-mile between the RIDC Drive (Exit 10) and Harmar (Exit 11) interchanges. A single 11-foot lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction of Route 28 in the southbound lanes.

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction approaching the crossover beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, PennDOT said.

While the crossover is in place, crews will work on replacing a 5-foot storm sewer pipe, according to PennDOT.

The work is part of a $15.32 million betterment project.

Swank Construction Company is the prime contractor on the project.
