Once-popular summer festival set to return in Allegheny Township

A popular summertime festival is returning to Allegheny Township.

Community Days — last organized in 1997 — is set to return June 24.

The township recently approved the formation of a Community Days Committee, spearheaded by Supervisor James Morabito.

“We have no records indicating why the event ceased 26 years ago,” Township Manager Greg Primm said. “In talking to individuals who were around back then, they recall it stopped because of lack of participation.”

Primm said the event’s return will help to create a sense of community pride and celebration.

“It’s always great to create gatherings where we can invite people to the community to see what Allegheny Township has to offer,” he said. “It creates support for our business community, those who vend at the event and the restaurants and amenities that may benefit.”

The venue location still is under consideration.

Another township event, Light the Season, returned in November after being on hiatus since 2019.

Morabito said bringing back the festival was a priority for him since taking office.

“All of our surrounding communities have some type of yearly celebration and, unfortunately, Allegheny Township doesn’t, and I want to change that,” Morabito said. “We have great residents, and our community is a great place to live and raise a family.”

Volunteer Frank Weissert moved from Lower Burrell to Allegheny Township in 2016.

Weissert, who is handling committee secretary duties and publicity, said he’s looking forward to bringing the community together with a big festival with a small-town feel.

“We’re hoping to welcome 500 to 1,000 attendees,” Weissert said.

The free event will include free children’s activities such as a clown and face painting, musical entertainment, craft vendors, a pie bake-off competition and food trucks.

A car show will serve as the anchor attraction.

“We’re in the early stages of putting together the event, but I feel it’s time to show our appreciation to the residents of Allegheny Township,” Morabito said.
