Students in Plum High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC program attend the borough council meeting on Nov. 13.

Plum Air Force Junior ROTC received a certification of achievement from Mayor Harry Schlegel during the borough council meeting on Nov. 13.

The mayor read a proclamation, stating in part:

“The goals of the AFJROTC program are to instill values and citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment in high school students, and I can personally attest the Plum High School JROTC Cadets have met these goals.”

Schlegel acknowledged “the dedication of retired Air Force Lt. Col Paul Nosek and Master Sgt. Kevin Butler, who share their wealth of experience and knowledge with these young men and women, and I commend these students for their loyalty, academic excellence, dedication, community service, sacrifice and leadership.”

On Nov. 10, the Air Force Junior ROTC hosted a program for veterans, presenting information “on how to properly retire unserviceable American Flags” and giving “an emotional performance of the POW/MIA Missing Man Table ceremony,” the mayor stated. “I for one was deeply touched by what these young men and women accomplished.”

“After witnessing the dedication of these JROTC Cadets,” Schlegel said, “I feel my sacrifice and the sacrifices of all veterans, especially those who paid the highest price to ensure our freedoms, was worth it.”

According to the Plum Borough School District website:

“Air Force Junior ROTC is a citizenship development program that is designed to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service, (and) instill personal responsibility, character and self-discipline. The program achieves this through classroom education in air and space fundamentals and hands-on learning opportunities in a number of fun and challenging co-curricular activities.”
