2 children among 5 hurt in 5-vehicle crash involving Plum school bus
Two children were among five people taken to area hospitals after a five-vehicle crash that included a Plum school bus Tuesday afternoon, according to borough police.
The crash, at Golden Mile Highway (Route 286) and South Duane Drive was reported shortly after 3 p.m.
The circumstances of the crash were not immediately available, as it remains under investigation, Plum police spokesman Det. Joe Little said.
Two cars were off the road, while one was on its side, reported TribLive news partner WTAE, which had its news helicopter over the scene.
The five people hurt had injuries that were not life threatening, Little said. The two children were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, while two others were taken to AHN Forbes Hospital and one was taken to UPMC East Hospital.
Plum School District Superintendent Rick Walsh confirmed one of the district’s buses was transporting students when it was involved in the crash.
In a message to families, the Plum School District identified the bus as No. 169.
District officials said paramedics evaluated the 27 middle school students on the bus and the driver.
“Out of an abundance of caution, two students were transported to the hospital in the custody of their parents for further evaluation,” Walsh said in a statement.
Another bus was sent to take other students home.
School counselors will be available Wednesday to help students affected by the incident, the district said.
