The global sensation “Mamma Mia” lands on the Springdale Jr./Sr. High School stage March 29-31.
“I like the fact that this musical is contemporary. We can do a lot with that,” says Emily Plunkett of her lead role as Sophie.
The global smash hit musical takes place on a tiny Greek island during the 1990s, introducing the audience to a mother and her bride-to-be daughter who seeks paternity answers from three possible men invited to Sophie’s impending island wedding.
Donna, Sophie’s mom, is the former lead singer of 1970s pop group Donna and the Dynamos and, mum on revealing daddy/daughter deets, finds Sophie turning investigator to try and solve her paternity ponderings.
Woven into the show are hit songs from Swedish pop band ABBA such as “Dancing Queen” and “Take A Chance on Me.”
Bre Cummings dons a bright red wig for her role as Tanya, best friend to Donna and Rosie.
“Tanya is very outgoing, in your face and she likes to get what she wants, when she wants it,” Cummings says. “And she is very much a manipulative person, in the best way.”
The cast also includes middle-school students. Upperclassman Jamie Tabaka says a small school equals more bonding opportunities.
“It’s a bunch of people that do extracurriculars coming together for something we all love to do and doing that we all get to bond over the love of musicals,” Tabaka says.
Lead roles include: Jaden Domaratz as Donna Sheridan, Emily Plunkett as Sophie Sheridan, Bre Cummings as Tanya, Liam Dale as Sam Carmichael, Sonny Yungwirth as Harry Bright, Matthew Yungwirth as Bill Austin and Zackary Conte as Sky.
“Mamma Mia” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 29-30 and 2:30 p.m. March 31. Tickets are $12, $8 students/seniors.
