The Feeding Freeport drive-by meal program got a boost from Frito-Lay with a semi tractor-trailer loaded with Doritos, baked Ruffles potato chips, popcorn and more, much of it in individual servings.

Feeding Freeport is a pop-up community effort that’s been at work since March 17 helping area residents impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.

Hot meals are free, prepared weekdays and distributed from a former drive-thru bank window at NextHome Dynamic Realty in Freeport. The effort is a collaboration between the realty company’s foundation, Dynamic Community Foundation, and Jackie Gaughan, a South Buffalo Township community activist.

“It’s very exciting for us to receive and distribute a gift of this magnitude,” said Heidi Powell, owner of NextHome Dynamic Realty.

Feeding Freeport passed on its good fortune to the Freeport food bank, a local Meals on Wheels and Project SEED, which feeds children living in the New Kensington-Arnold School District.

The trailer arrived late Tuesday morning, requiring about 25 volunteers to form a box brigade to unload 1,300 cases of Frito-Lay products for storage.

Small bags of Doritos were served with Tuesday’s free meal, Powell said.

Demand for the free meals is not slowing down, with the number of meals prepared hovering in the mid-400 range weekdays, she said.

To get a free meal, the public can drive up to the Dynamic Realty office, 235 Fifth St. in Freeport, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For deliveries, residents can call the realty office at 724-295-5500 or visit the Dynamic Community Foundation’s Facebook page.
