Vandergrift police charged a woman with a felony drug dealing charge after, police said, they found more than 5 ounces of marijuana and a digital scale in her vehicle during a traffic stop.
Mariah Shantel Hannay, 22, of Penn Hills was charged with a felony count of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver along with fines for drug possession, speeding and having open bottles of liquor in her vehicle.
She faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec on July 12, according to court records.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, a patrol officer pulled over a Nissan SUV along Custer Avenue on June 2 that was traveling 54 mph in a 25 mph zone.
The officer said there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which Hannay said was from “a couple of roaches in the ashtray,” the complaint said.
Hannay told police that she had a state medical marijuana card but that it was expired, according to the complaint.
Police said Hannay gave them permission to search the SUV, where they found the roaches and a small bag of suspected marijuana in the ashtray.
Two open bottles of vodka and an open bottle of rum were found behind the passenger seat, according to the complaint.
When police searched a backpack on the rear seat that had two boxes inside, they found a digital scale and a total of 5.4 ounces of marijuana packaged in various quantities, the complaint said.
Police said Hannay also had a 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun in the backpack along with drug paraphernalia.
She was released from custody after being processed at the scene, police said.
