PennDOT will conduct around-the-clock seal coating and pavement marking operations this weekend, May 10-11, on Allegheny River Boulevard, weather permitting.

Allegheny River Boulevard will close to traffic from 7 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday between Sandy Creek Road and Washington Boulevard.

Traffic will be detoured. The posted detour east of the closure is as follows:

• From Allegheny River Boulevard, take Sandy Creek Road southbound;

• Turn right onto Verona Road;

• Continue straight onto Robinson Boulevard;

• Continue onto Monitor Street;

• Slight right onto Park Avenue — Park Avenue becomes East Swissvale Avenue;

• Turn right onto Penn Avenue;

• Turn right onto Fifth Avenue — Fifth Avenue becomes Washington Boulevard;

• Follow Washington Boulevard back to Allegheny River Boulevard;

The detour west of the closure is the same as above but in the opposite direction.

Additional work requiring closure of the corrider is planned for the weekend of May 17-18. Details on that closure will be provided in advance of the work.

Each year, PennDOT’s maintenance crews perform numerous operations designed to maintain the integrity of the road surface and preserve its life.

Seal coating, more commonly referred to as “tar and chips,” is essential in preserving the life of a road surface because it prevents moisture from entering the pavement through surface cracks and oxidized asphalt surfaces.
