Washington Township police accused a woman of selling drugs after finding more than half an ounce of suspected methamphetamine when she was pulled over for speeding.

Deborah Jane Babyak, 60, of Carnahan Road in Bell Township was charged with a felony count of manufacture, delivery or possession with the intent to deliver drugs in connection with the Dec. 3 incident.

A township officer was on patrol near the intersection of Routes 66 and 388 shortly after 12:30 a.m. when he spotted a Subaru without rear lights that was traveling over 65 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, according to a criminal complaint.

After stopping the car near Route 66 and Walker Road, the officer spotted a partially opened cigarette pack with what appeared to be a glass pipe used to smoke meth, the complaint said.

The officer confiscated the pipe and asked Babyak if she was “in possession of any other contraband.”

Babyak told the officer she had “something” in an eyeglass case in her purse and verbally consented for the officer to search her and the vehicle, according to the arrest papers.

Police said Babyak had a plastic bag with 15 grams of suspected methamphetamine along with more than $4,300 in cash.

The officer also found a pair of what are believed to be ledgers or “owe sheets” that contain the names of people who owe money for drugs they bought, the complaint said.

A grocery bag with suspected marijuana also was found between the driver’s seat and the center console and an open can of Henry’s Hard Soda was retrieved from under the seat, the officer wrote in the complaint.

In addition to the felony drug charge, Babyak was charged with two counts of marijuana possession and three traffic violations.

Babyak was detained in the Westmoreland County Jail until posting a $20,000 bond on Dec. 6.

She faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Jason Buczak on Dec. 13.
