Wooden Door Winery's Allegheny Township location for sale
A popular winery in Allegheny Township is up for sale.
Wooden Door Winery at 4087 Greenwood Road opened in 2010.
Husband and wife wine-making team and co-owners Jeff and Krissy Pollick have a message for all of their loyal customers:
“We are open. We are not closing,” said Krissy Pollick .
Both Wooden Door Winery locations, including the other winery in downtown Vandergrift, are open, operating and plan to stay that way as the couple prepares to field offers from potential buyers for the Allegheny Township location.
“We want to stop any rumors about closing. We’re really excited about this season,” said Jeff Pollick, a former teacher. “We are open and will remain open even though the Allegheny Township location is for sale.”
The couple made the decision to sell the 6-acre property, including the winery barn and 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home, after receiving shocking news last year.
“In April of last year, Jeff was diagnosed with cancer,” Krissy Pollick explained. “It was a big family decision to look at our lifestyle and really evaluate where things were at — what’s important.”
Another reason for the decision to sell their flagship winery is the couple are currently building their dream home nearby on Jeff’s family’s farm, and their two adult children are pursuing their professions after growing up working at the family businesses.
For Jeff, decades of working every weekend alongside his wife and kids have provided success, socialization and family unity as they share their passion for wine-making with the public.
“We realized real quick (when I got sick) we were working seven days a week, and I was bartending with a chemo pump in.”
The winery produces more than 12,000 bottles annually, produced on-site.
Vandergrift’s Wooden Door Winery, housed in a renovated historic church, is at the corner of Washington and Custer avenues.
The Vandergrift location will remain open year-round and is not for sale.
“For us, Vandergrift is a place where we can grow and do things together, and we’re super excited about that,” Krissy Pollick said.
The Allegheny Township location operates seasonally and closes during the winter months. It opened in 2010, after the couple spent two years renovating what was a former horse barn into an elegantly rustic indoor-outdoor venue.
Zoned R-2 agricultural, the property can legally be used in three ways, as a residence, a winery or a farm, said Allegheny Township Manager Greg Primm.
A retail store or restaurant would be a commercial application, which is restricted to commercial zoning districts.
“Anyone can ask for rezoning, but in order to receive a rezoning approval, there are restrictions under the (Pennsylvania) Municipalities Planning Code that define spot zoning as illegal,” Primm said. “So, in essence, you can’t take just one parcel and make it C-2 (commercial).”
The Pollicks are not using a real estate agent and are taking inquiries themselves. They would not reveal the asking price.
The Pollicks make all of their wines with grapes and juices shipped in from the Lake Erie region and California.
More than 30 varieties of wines are offered.
Allegheny Towship Supervisor James Morabito has known the Pollick family for decades.
“I would like to see it continue as a winery because it’s excellent for the community and it gives the residents of the community a great place to gather and enjoy the wine and events that are always there,” Morabito said.
The Wooden Door Winery brand is not included in the sale.
The couple said news of the winery going on the market is trickling out and they’ve been fielding questions from customers.
“They say ‘Oh, no!’ and ‘Please tell us it’s not true,’ ” Jeff Pollick said.
“It’s business as usual while we try and sell. It got out there, maybe, because of my big mouth, ” Jeff joked.
Interested potential buyers are asked to call 724-889-7244 to make an appointment for a tour of the property.
