Two people accused of fleeing from police Friday in Scottdale are now being held at the Westmoreland County Prison.
A borough officer who stopped about noon at a Water Street convenience store reported recognizing Westley Matthews, 43, of Bullskin, as a person who had warrants out for his arrest. When the officer tried to take Matthews into custody, they got into a scuffle inside the store that spilled outside, according to court papers.
The officer fell and Matthews ran toward a black Dodge Charger where police said Bobbi Jo Hutchinson, 41, of East Huntingdon, was waiting. They took off with the officer in pursuit. Matthews eventually jumped out of the car and ran into a wooded area, police said.
The Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Department and state police helped local officers look for Matthews Friday with no success, according to court papers. The Scottdale officer had a sprained wrist and bruises.
Police caught up with the suspects Sunday in Aliquippa. Officers in Aliquippa were notified by Westmoreland sheriff’s deputies around 4:30 p.m. that the Dodge Charger was seen on a license plate reader there. Police found the car on Sheffield Avenue in Aliquippa and conducted a traffic stop on a bridge near 16th Street.
Both Matthews and Hutchinson were inside the car, according to Aliquippa police. They were taken into custody.
Charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension were filed against Matthews. Hutchinson is charged with conspiracy, hindering apprehension and related offenses. Bail was set at $50,000 each Monday.
They did not have attorneys listed in online court records. Preliminary hearings are set for Oct. 23.
