Not all of the black Angus cows wandering through south Murrysville have been spotted, but a group of three has been regularly visiting a temporary feeding station set up by members of the Westmoreland County Animal Response Team.

“We added more panels to a temporary corral around the feeding trough,” said CART coordinator Lori Mozina. “We’re waiting now for all three to stay in there long enough to close up the entrance.”

The herd of eight to 10 cows was first spotted in late April on School Road South. On April 29, a motorist on School Road struck one of the cows, and Murrysville police started receiving daily calls from residents who spotted one or more in the area of School Road, Boxcartown Road and Haymaker Farm Road near the municipality’s border with Penn Township.

The temporary corral was set up on privately owned land.

“The owner doesn’t want others on his property, so we have to respect his wishes,” Mozina said in declining to say where the corral was placed. CART officials “don’t want the public getting near and scaring them off to another area, or we’ll have to start from scratch with gaining their trust.”

Other members of the small herd have not been spotted lately, Mozina said, adding that CART officials are still unable to locate the herd’s owner.
