Antique dealers, fire equipment to greet downtown Greensburg visitors

Vintage values will await shoppers in downtown Greensburg Saturday during the annual Antiques on the Avenue event.

A mix of about 40 antique dealers from Westmoreland, Allegheny and Somerset counties will be set up from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations along South Pennsylvania Avenue, including the Pitt-Penn parking lot and the Buncher lot next to the post office.

Some dealers will be located in the 300 block of Pennsylvania, which will be closed to traffic during the event.

Also on hand will be The Original Pie Shoppe from Laughlintown, with pastry delights, and Barry’s Italian Ice, with cool treats.

The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Museum, located nearby behind City Hall, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and will have one of its signature antique engines — a restored 1949 Seagrave pumper truck — displayed on Pennsylvania. The museum houses additional firefighting equipment from the past, as well as photos and toy and model fire trucks.

The antiques extravaganza is organized by the Greensburg Business & Professional Association, also known as Shop Greensburg.

Thrift sale is in the bag

More deals will be in store the same day just a few blocks away.

The YWCA thrift shop is winding up its end-of-summer savings event with a bag sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 221 S. Maple Ave. The cost is $5 for all the items that will fit in a bag.

The shop will be closed on Monday for restocking and will reopen Tuesday with a selection of fall merchandise.

Normal hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
