Catholics from the Diocese of Greensburg will gather on Aug. 15 for the annual Mass and candlelight procession for the feast of the Assumption.

Greensburg Bishop Edward C. Malesic will celebrate the Mass at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Chapel, Christ Our Shepherd Center. The candlelight procession will follow.

Participants will pray the rosary in several different languages, including English, Latin, Italian, Spanish, German, Tagalog (a language of the Philippines), Polish and Korean. Henna Bautista, a parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg, is coordinating the rosary prayers.

An estimated 300 parishioners have participated in the last two years.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the feast of the Assumption celebrates the moment when the Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, “was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven.”

It is one of 14 major feasts in the Latin rite that are classified as solemnities.
