“By supporting BVA Derby Day, people are helping provide a well-rounded education for our young people,” Svrcek said. “They also are assuring that our community continues to thrive in the future.”

The BVA Charitable Fund, founded in 2016 by the Belle Vernon Area school board, is managed by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County. Svrcek was among those appointed to the original board.

“The BVA Charitable Fund asked me as one of the business people in the Rostraver area for ideas on how we can raise money, and somebody suggested something on the farm. I thought a Kentucky Derby party would be a good way to go,” he said.

Amulet Farms, 550 Rostraver Road, is a harness racing training center for horses that race at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

Sponsorships are still available, as well as event tickets at $20 each. The tickets can be purchased at CSC Insurance Options, located along Route 51 South just past the Route 201 interchange, or by e-mail at bvaderbyday.com. When payment is made by credit card or using PayPal accounts, tickets will be mailed.

The rain date is May 18, the day of the Preakness Stakes — the second leg of the Triple Crown — at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
