Vitalant, a nonprofit blood and biotherapies health care company based in Pittsburgh, is planning a series of community donor drives to help boost blood supply in the region.

The company has declared an emergency shortage of type O blood — the most transfused blood type. While O blood types are extremely versatile for the health care of other patients, donors of other blood types and platelet donations also are necessary.

Donors who give through Aug. 29 will receive a $10 gift card and be entered into the Grocery Giveaway, where two winners will receive a $10,000 pre-paid gift card of their choosing.

Upcoming blood drives include the following:

Murrysville: 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, 4420 William Penn Highway

North Huntingdon: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 18, Circleville Volunteer Fire Department, 129 Robbins Station Road

Trafford: 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22, Christian Life Church activity center, 900 Seventh St.

Export: 2 to 7 p.m. Aug. 26, AMVETS Post 85 Ladies Auxiliary, 2100 Carolina St.

Belle Vernon: 2 to 7 p.m. Aug. 27, CFS Bank Event Center community room, 111 Gallitin Road

Smithton: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 31, Smithton Volunteer Fire Department, 131 First St.
