Cops: Greensburg man confesses to robbing downtown Sunoco twice in March

A Crime Stoppers’ tip led police to a 29-year-old Greensburg man who admitted robbing a Sunoco convenience store-service station downtown twice in March, according court documents.
Brad L. Smith, 29, was arrested Monday on two counts each of robbery and receiving stolen property in connection with the holdups that occurred between 7-8 p.m. March 10 and March 30 at the Sunoco station at 311 W. Otterman St. District Judge Chris Flanigan ordered Smith held in the county prison without bond, saying he was a danger to the community.
Detective Sgt. John Swank said following up on the tip, police went to Smith’s Painter Street home to question him about the March 30 robbery, where police said a man entered the store wearing blue jeans, gray undershirt, a beanie and dark glasses, and pulled out a box-cutter knife and threatened the clerk.
The suspect ran from the store with an undetermined about of cash, police said.
“Smith admitted the robbery and said he needed the money to fund his heroin addiction. Smith said he had gone to rehab and was doing much better … and had been clean for several weeks,” Swank wrote in court documents.
Swank said upon questioning, Smith admitted he committed the March 10 robbery as well.
“Smith apologized and said he was high on heroin during that time period,” Swank said in court documents.
Flanigan scheduled Smith’s preliminary hearing for June 6.
