Greensburg Parks and Recreation is celebrating the season with the return of its holiday decorating contest.

Friday is the deadline for contest entries and for kids to correspond with Mr. Claus in the Letters From Santa program.

City residents can take part in the contest by submitting a photo of their decorated house, yard or window by 4 p.m. Friday. Photos can be emailed to rec@greensburgpa.org or submitted via Facebook message, along with the entrant’s name, street address, phone number and email address.

Submissions will be posted to the Parks and Recreation Facebook page, where viewers can cast their votes with a “like” for their favorite entry between noon Monday and 4 p.m. Dec. 21.

The winner will be announced at noon Dec. 22 and will receive a bundle of passes to city recreational facilities, including Veterans’ Memorial Pool, the recently renovated Kirk S. Nevin ice arena and Mt. Odin Golf Course.

For details, call 724-834-4880.

Kids’ letters to Santa can be dropped off in a special red mailbox at the recreation office window inside the Nevin arena. Letters also can mailed to: “Letters from Santa,” 520 New Alexandria Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.

Letters must include the child’s name and mailing address.

Letters received by Friday will get a reply from Santa.

Looking ahead to next year, Greensburg Council this week approved the addition of various music classes to the spring schedule of parks and recreation programs.

Dates are yet to be determined for the classes, which will include offerings for children and adults. Council approved attendance fees of $15 per week, $60 for four weeks and $120 for eight weeks.

Those rates apply to all participants, whether or not they reside in the city, according to Mayor Robb Bell.

“We are looking to partner with Practice Makes Perfect Music Studio to have their instructors lead the classes,” said Lydia Kinkaid, the city’s recreation program manager. “We will have classes like Munchkins, Music and Me, Mini Musicians and Musical Theater, and will include instruments or singing, depending on the type of class.”

Registration for spring recreation programs will begin Jan. 8.
