Derry Township bridge replacement to trigger 21-mile detour; I-70 restrictions slated

PennDOT is planning a 21-mile detour for Derry Township motorists and lane restrictions on Interstate 70 in Rostraver, both beginning Monday.

Route 982 in Derry Township will be closed between Garrigan Hill and Laughlin Farm roads while contractor Beaver Excavating installs a box culvert to replace a bridge over a tributary of Stony Run.

The posted detour, which is expected to be in place until late August, includes routes 22 and 981 and Industrial Boulevard.

Motorists aren’t the only ones who will be affected by the bridge closure. Local officials are temporarily adjusting their plan for dispatching crews to emergencies in some sections of the township.

“We’re going to be delayed in our response because of the construction,” said Mark Piantine, chief of Derry Township Volunteer Fire Company 1 of Bradenville.

If traffic crashes occur in areas north of the closure, firefighters from New Alexandria and Blairsville will be dispatched along with crews from the Bradenville company. In the event of a structure fire in that portion of the township, Crabtree and Black Lick companies also will be dispatched along with the others, Piantine said.

“It needs to be replaced,” township supervisors Chairman Jim Prohaska said of the bridge. “Bridges fatigue over a period of years. We kept dropping the weight limit on it.”

Weather conditions could affect progress on the $930,000 project. The work will include milling and full-depth reconstruction of road pavement and an update of guard rails and signs.

Two road work details in Rostraver will prompt single-lane restrictions for eastbound traffic on Interstate 70, according to PennDOT.

A lane restriction is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday between the Arnold City exit (Exit 44) and Crawford Lane. That will allow maintenance crews to perform washout repairs along the shoulder of the roadway.

A lane restriction also will be in place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday between Route 51 and the Smithton exit (Exit 49). Crews from PennDOT and contractor Golden Triangle will perform a bridge inspection as part of the ongoing $120.6 million project to reconfigure and update the Route 51 interchange on the interstate.
