A Greensburg man wanted on aggravated assault and other charges forced a SWAT team to enter a Perry Avenue residence to arrest him Thursday.

Tyler Schultheis, 34, was wanted on a warrant issued Wednesday listing charges of aggravated assault, strangulation, terroristic threats and unlawful restraint, according to court records.

A search warrant also was obtained for the Schultheis residence on the 500 block of Perry Avenue.

Schultheis is accused of threatening to harm law enforcement if they attempted to arrest him at his home, Greensburg police said. They opted to activate the county’s SWAT team, which arrived at the house about 6:20 a.m. Thursday.

Schultheis refused to answer the phone or comply with orders to leave the house, police said. After several hours, police used tear gas inside the building but got no response.

Police used drones to search the house, where they found Schultheis hiding in a second-floor closet. He was taken into custody about 11 a.m., police said.

In addition to the original charges, new charges of resisting arrest and obstructing police were added Thursday.

Schultheis was denied bail and taken to the Westmoreland County Prison. He was dragged into the courtroom by police and had to be carried out after refusing to move following a brief arraignment hearing.

A Dec. 26 preliminary hearing on all charges is set in Judge Chris Flanigan’s Greensburg court.

An attorney for Schultheis was not listed in court records.
