The Westmoreland County Coroner’s office said a Jeannette couple was killed in a crash Saturday on Agnew Road in Hempfield Township.

Catherine M. and Walter J. Gardner, 58 and 61, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 5:45 p.m. single-vehicle crash on the 400 block of Agnew Road, according to Coroner Ken Bacha.

The coroner’s office reported that Walter Gardner was driving his 2001 Ford F-150 north when he drove off the road for an unknown reason, went over an embankment where the truck overturned and came to rest upright in a small creek. Catherine Gardner was a passenger in the truck.

The coroner’s office reported that neither occupant in the truck was wearing a seat belt. Authorities said the air bags did deploy.

Deputy Coroner John A. Ackerman pronounced the Gardners dead at the scene about 6:35 p.m..

Cause of death for both victims was ruled multiple blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

State police in Greensburg assisted in the investigation.

The road was closed for more than three hours after the crash.

A funeral home has not been announced.
