Export officials would like their freshly-paved streets to stay in that condition. So, in addition to efforts to coordinate local utility construction with street work, they are also considering an ordinance that strengthens the requirements for restoring streets following utility work.

During a discussion about the use of federal grant funding for street repairs at council’s meeting Wednesday, Feb. 7 Mayor Joe Zaccagnini said potential work on Harrison and Madison avenues would hopefully be bid in April.

However, depends on the completion of work on natural gas lines in the area.

“Lincoln Avenue is on the gas company’s list of upcoming work, and the (Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County) is also planning work on part of Lincoln,” Zaccagnini said. “That’s why it’s so important for the two of them to get together and coordinate this work.”

Export officials have had a tough time keeping some of the federally-funded street work intact, thanks to recent water main breaks that required MAWC to open up the street for repairs.

Solicitor Wes Long said he is working on an updated street-opening ordinance for council’s March meeting. It would set stricter parameters for restoring streets to their original condition following utility work.

Long said the new ordinance would require curb-to-curb restoration if the street has been repaved within the past five years, as well as under other circumstances.

“We can’t spend money redoing the streets over and and over,” Zaccagnini said.

Selfless Servant Award

On behalf of the J.M. Hall Trust and the borough, Long presented Councilman John Nagoda with the 2023 Export Borough and B. Earnest Long Selfless Servant Award.

Nagoda has been a borough councilman for several decades. He was given the award “for your years of selfless dedication to the borough we live in,” Long said.

Historical society at train station

Members of the Export Historical Society will be on hand Sunday, Feb. 12 from 2-4 p.m. to open the train station’s second room of historical memorabilia and answer questions.

The train station is located in the borough parking lot on Washington Avenue.
