Fire, hazmat officials clean up fuel spill in Hempfield
County hazmat crews, firefighters and other emergency officials were working late Saturday morning to contain a fuel spill on South Center Avenue in Hempfield.
Hempfield Assistant Chief Don Thoma said a truck delivering a piece of heavy equipment to Case Construction crashed and began leaking fuel. Firefighters were laying down absorbent pads along South Center Avenue to help soak up the spilled fuel.
“We don’t believe it got all the way down to the creek,” Thoma said, referring to Belson Run, which is about 1,000 feet south of the fuel spill site.
Thoma said a crew from McCutcheon Enterprises in Washington Township was on the way to help assess and clean up the spill.
