No one was injured but there was major damage to a first-floor apartment where a blaze started Sunday morning at the Derry Manor apartments in Derry Borough, a fire official said.
Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 7:30 a.m. to the building at 118 W. Fourth Ave., said Josh Campbell, chief of the Derry Borough Volunteer Fire Department.
No one was home in the apartment where the blaze started, Campbell said. Firefighters were able to contain flames to that apartment and helped evacuate the building while ventilating smoke from hallways.
It is believed the tenant in that apartment was in the process of moving out, Campbell said.
He said the flames were knocked down quickly, and other residents were able to return to their apartments after about two hours.
Additional firefighting units from Bradenville, Blairsville, Latrobe, Ligonier and Youngstown assisted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Campbell, Derry police and a state police fire marshal.
