Gennaro Piraino, superintendent of the Franklin Regional School District, will give the keynote address at the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce’s annual prayer breakfast on Jan. 31.

Piraino is the Superintendent of the Year as chosen by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators. The breakfast will mark the 45th year the chamber has hosted the gathering.

Piraino was appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf as PASA’s representative on the Pennsylvania School Safety and Security Committee, and he also chairs the Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development, building partnerships between schools, businesses and local government.

Piraino received PASA’s 2019 Superintendent of the Year award a little under a year ago at the Fred Rogers Center at Saint Vincent College.

“There’s only one Fred Rogers,” he said at the time. “What he did for kids will impact people for generations, and there’s no better place to celebrate the future of education.”

Piraino said one of the many things he admired about Rogers was the philosophical influence he inspired.

“He chose to make a difference in the lives of children through his role as a television personality,” Piraino said. “It’s all about seeing a need, making it your problem and responding to make a difference.”

The prayer breakfast will be from 7-9 a.m., Jan. 31 at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center off Route 30 in Hempfield. The cost is $20 per person and $15 for a student sponsorship.
