When Big East Youth Football League teams get together for four championship games this weekend in Vandergrift, squads from Franklin Regional will have a chance to win half of them.
The Franklin Area Midget Football Association’s 7/8 and 11/12 teams will go up against Gateway and McKeesport, respectively, on Saturday at Davis Field in Vandergrift.
“It’s the first time in quite some time we’ve had two teams playing for a championship,” said FAMFA President Brad Mocharko. “Recruiting-wise, we did pretty good this year, got some good families in the organization.”
FAMFA is down a little in participation but, with more than 90 children playing youth football, there is a deep pool of talent from which to draw.
Youth football players in the oldest age bracket have had plenty of time on the field together, Mocharko said.
“For the most part, we’ve retained all our kids throughout the organization,” he said. “We have a few who joined their teams late, but mostly they’ve been playing with one another since they were in flag football at five and six years old.”
The 7/8 team will go up against Gateway at 2 p.m. The 11/12 team will play McKeesport at 5 p.m. Both games are at Davis Field, 101 Linden Avenue in Vandergrift.
