Organizers of the annual Greensburg Craft Beer Week are shaking things up this year, moving the event forward from fall to early summer and adding a one-day festival in St. Clair Park.
The nine-day schedule offers more than 30 opportunities to sample area specialty brews, edibles and entertainment.
During Friday’s kickoff, the 90 Miles to Cuba Key Lime Pie Sour will be back on draft at Greensburg’s Invisible Man Brewing, accompanied by a food truck from Mi Empanada, from 4 to 9 p.m. Also beginning at 4 p.m., Marino’s American Eatery in Hempfield will offer a New Zealand Pilsner by partnering with Helltown Brewing.
The week will come to a close June 25 with a variety of activities including a pub run, a corn hole tournament and a block party.
“After five years, we got bored having it in September,” said event organizer and Greensburg Downtown Project director Jessica Hickey. “We moved it to June to change up the week a little bit.
“It allows our local breweries to have different beers. At this time of year, there are a lot of sours and fruited beers. It’s different than what they’ve done in the past.”
Other featured brews will include: You Can’t Put Pineapple On Pizza, a pineapple whip beer from Sobel’s Obscure Brewery of Jeannette; Braggot, a blend of Hired Hand Saison and Apricot Mead, from Noble Stein Brewing of Indiana and South Greensburg’s Laurel Highlands Meadery; and Yapped, a peach milkshake IPA offered in a collaboration between Delmont’s Yellow Bridge Brewing and Tapped Brick Oven and Pour House of Hempfield.
The June 18 craft beer festival is “something we’ve been wanting to do,” Hickey said, noting the ticketed event for people 21 and older will allow those attending to sample selections from 20 breweries all in one spot.
“It’s a beautiful park that has everything we need for the event,” she said.
The festival also will feature food trucks, games and live music from Josh Jams and The String Theory.
General admission for the 5 p.m. festival costs $4o and includes a souvenir glass. A $55 VIP ticket includes early admission at 4 p.m., the glass, a coozie, light bites and a pairing.
The Olde Spitfire Grille in South Greensburg will host a Father’s Day Beer Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Reservations are recommended at 724-205-6402.
Greensburg’s El Diablo Brewing Company and Wood-Fired Kitchen will serve a four-course brewers dinner at 5:30 p.m. Monday in collaboration with Invisible Man Brewing. June 17 is the deadline for reservations at 724-221-6430.
Petagogy of Greensburg will host a Yappy Hour from 5 to 7 p.m June 23 featuring local brews for guests 21 and older and treats for their canine companions. Any bar tips and 10% of sales will benefit Wayward Whiskers Animal Rescue.
From 6 to 9 p.m. the same day, Noble Stein representatives will serve as guest bartenders at Oliver’s Pourhouse in Greensburg, raising money in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region.
Activities on June 25 include the week’s annual Pub Run, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Hugo’s Taproom, 106 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg. There is no fee to participate in the event, which is organized by the Run Greensburg group.
“It’s a short 30-minute run that’s open to runners of all ages and abilities,” said Cara Lincoln, who is a board member of the group. “Usually, we get around 25 people participating, but the more, the merrier.
“We’ll enjoy adult beverages afterward at the bar. It’s a fun way for runners to enjoy the Craft Beer Week and support a local business.”
The Olde Spitfire Grille will host a cornhole tournament June 25, while Helltown Brewing will take over the taps. Registration for two-person teams begins at noon, with the competition getting underway at 2 p.m.
A block of Greensburg’s South Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed to traffic from 4 to 8 p.m. June 25 for a block party featuring music, food from Oliver’s Pourhouse and Just Roll’d Up and beverages from four craft breweries.
