A Greensburg man is jailed on $10,000 bond after state police say he assaulted, choked and robbed a woman of $275 and her cell phone before abandoning her along a rural Derry Township road.

Robert W. Kinney is charged with robbery, theft, simple assault and strangulation in connection with the incident that police say occurred while he and the woman were riding with three others along rural Guerrier Road in Derry Township about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The woman, who lives in Youngwood, told state police that she was a passenger in a car with Kinney and four others when he instructed the driver to pull off the side of the road, grabbed the woman by her hair and began hitting her face and head.

Kinney, who was in the front passenger seat, then ordered the woman out of the car and threatened her with a knife before putting it away and punching her, according to Trooper Martin Mihelic.

The woman told Mihelic that the 6-foot 4-inch, 220-pound Kinney then choked her until she lost consciousness at the scene. Police allege Kinney took $275 out of the woman’s pocket and her cell phone before fleeing with the others in the car. She reported the incident to police several hours later.

Mihelic said two other people who were in the car corroborated her story.

According to online court dockets, Kinney, who used to live in Rostraver and Charleroi, Washington County, received a two-year probation sentence after pleading guilty in 2014 to resisting arrest in connection with an incident in 2014 in Rostraver.

Court dockets also indicate he served a 9- to 23-month jail sentence in Washington County after pleading guilty to burglary and conspiracy charges filed by Donora Police in 2011.

He was arrested on a warrant Saturday and arraigned and ordered held in the county prison on Sunday.
