A Greensburg man wanted by both city and state police on multiple theft charges has been arrested.
Chad E. Carlton, 34, of Greensburg, was arrested Oct. 7 by Greensburg police and charged with one count of theft by deception following his arraignment Saturday.
Police said Carlton fraudulently leased a Southwest Greensburg apartment that he did not own.
According to a criminal complaint, Carlton offered to rent an Oakland Avenue apartment he claimed to own to a woman he had met through his job at a Greensburg tanning salon. Carlton said he owned the property and that the woman could begin moving in on Sept. 30, 2021.
The woman told police that Carlton provided a key to the apartment, but when she arrived, she got into a confrontation with a man who was already there. The man said Carlton had previously broken into the apartment, and was a former tenant but not the owner.
Police eventually discovered that the apartment was owned by Carlton’s boss at the tanning salon. By that time, according to a criminal complaint, the woman seeking to rent the apartment had already paid just under $700, which Carlton said would be the first month’s rent.
Greensburg Patrolman Justin Scalzo filed a criminal complaint charging Carlton with one count of theft by deception.
Carlton had been arrested last month by Greensburg police and charged with theft and possession of a counterfeit or altered device in connection with a Sept. 10 incident. He also had an active warrant filed by state police out of the Kiski Valley barracks on charges of theft and receiving stolen property in connection with a Sept. 20 incident in Derry Township.
In addition to an Oct. 21 preliminary hearing on the earlier Greensburg charges, Carlton also faces an Oct. 27 hearing for the charges filed by state police, and an Oct. 28 hearing on the new charges related to the alleged apartment fraud. The Oct. 28 hearing is at 10 a.m. in District Judge Joseph R. DeMarchis’ Jeannette court.
Carlton is in Westmoreland County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bond. An attorney was not listed in court records.
