Greensburg residents have a couple months to sort through unwanted items in their garages, attics and closets if they want to participate in the city’s inaugural community yard sale.
The daylong event, organized by Greensburg Parks & Recreation, is scheduled on May 20 and is free for city residents who want to sell items.
“The yard sale is new, to get more community involvement,” said city Councilwoman Sheila M. Brumley.
“I know South Greensburg does a community yard sale,” said Lydia Kinkaid, Greensburg’s recreation program manager. Last year’s yard sale in that neighboring municipality was on June 4.
“A lot of households there participated,” said Kinkaid. “I’m anxious to see how many people participate in the city.
“I know I have a lot of junk to get rid of. Hopefully, a lot of other people do, too, and will sign up for it.”
Residents can register for the sale by submitting their address to the recreation department by 4 p.m. on May 18. Call 724-834-4880, email rec@greensburgpa.org or send a message via the department’s Facebook page.
Participating addresses will be listed online by the department.
“We have plenty of programs and special events coming up,” Brumley said of the rec department.
That includes a family-oriented dance scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. on March 11. Billed in the past as a father-and-daughter event, it has been recast as a “You & Me Dance.”
“It doesn’t have to be a father and daughter,” Kinkaid said. “I switched it to a You & Me Dance, so we can open it up to mothers with sons and grandparents with their grandkids. It’s all-inclusive.”
Last year’s dance was held at the city’s Kirk S. Nevin Arena at Lynch Field. Since the arena’s ice rink will be under construction, getting an updated refrigeration system, this years’s dance will be held at Greensburg Hose Co. No. 1, 6 McLaughlin Drive.
The cost is $30 per couple, $15 for each additional child. Registration can be completed online, by calling the recreation department, or by appearing in person at the arena office at Lynch Field, 520 New Alexandria Road, Greensburg.
Looking further ahead, Greensburg’s community Easter Egg hunt is set for April 1 at Lynch Field. Start times for the hunt, by age bracket, are: 2 p.m., for age 4 or younger; 2:30 p.m., for ages 5-8; and 3 p.m., for ages 9-12.
Participants should bring their own bag or basket to collect eggs. Pre-registration is encouraged by visiting gbgeasteregghunt2023.eventbrite.com.
Walk & Talk is on track
Ongoing spring recreation programs will include a new adult Walk & Talk series, 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from April 18 through May 23. In this free program, participants age 18 or older will meet at the map on the side of the Nevin Arena and will discuss a new topic each week while walking 2 miles around the Lynch Field track.
It’s ideal for those “looking to get in shape and make new friends.”
Pavilions for rent
Feb. 6 is the first day to rent St. Clair Park or pavilions at other city parks, including Mt. Odin.
New this year, Brumley said, “All pavilion rentals will be handled at Lynch Field. Before, they were at the separate parks.”
Rentals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8 a.m. that day at the recreation office in the arena. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m.
Any updated information will be posted on the recreation department Facebook page, Brumley said. Questions can be directed to 724-834-4880.
