Greensburg Salem promotes athletic director to assistant high school principal
Frank Sundry will return to the role of an assistant principal Monday, after being promoted to that job at Greensburg Salem from his current post as the district’s athletic director.
The school board this week approved Sundry as assistant high school principal, at a prorated salary of $85,571. The assistant job title was revived in anticipation of high school principal David Zilli’s Dec. 31 retirement and the expectation that Adam Jones, current co-principal, will succeed Zilli.
A 2004 Greensburg Salem graduate, Sundry spent part of his career in North Carolina, where he served as an assistant elementary principal, a middle school principal and assistant athletic director.
He landed the athletic director job at Greensburg Salem in 2020, after he and his family moved back to the area to be closer to relatives.
Superintendent Ken Bissell said Sundry was the top choice in the district’s search, bringing to his new role “a wealth of knowledge of, not only being an assistant principal, but being a building principal — how to use data in the classroom and how to coach teachers in using data for classroom instruction.
“He helped to lead a lot of initiatives dealing with student discipline and student engagement in North Carolina.”
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to grow our entire school and not just our student athletes,” Sundry said. “When this opportunity presented itself, it was too good to pass up.
“It’s a very big honor to be able to step into a role where I get to work directly with students on an everyday basis and work with the teachers.”
Sundry graduated from Penn State in 2008 with a degree in sports journalism and kinesiology. He earned an English degree and master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at Saint Vincent College in 2011, and an administrative degree at North Carolina-Charlotte.
District parent Gen Mellot spoke against Sundry’s selection, preferring to have a woman as a role model in the assistant principal post.
Jennifer Kapusta previously served as an assistant principal at the high school before being promoted to principal at the district’s Hutchinson Elementary School.
