PennDOT is planning lane restrictions and rolling stoppages Monday night for traffic on Route 30 near the East Pittsburgh Street overpass in Hempfield.
The restrictions will affect eastbound and westbound traffic on the highway from 8 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
It will allow crews with contractor Charles J. Merlo to use a crane to dismantle and remove beams of the East Pittsburgh Street bridge. The work schedule is part of a $7.6 million project to replace the bridge; construction is expected to wrap up by May 2024.
Because of lane restrictions for eastbound traffic over the Pittsburgh Street bridge, there is no safe walkway across the bridge for pedestrians during the current construction season — through at least late September, according to PennDOT. Pedestrians are being cautioned not to use the shoulder of the road as a walkway across the bridge.
Upgrades to affect Route 136
Beginning Monday, motorists can expect to encounter additional lane restrictions on sections of Route 136 in Westmoreland County and on various routes in Hempfield, when other PennDOT road and bridge work gets underway.
Alternating single-lane restrictions are planned during the day on Route 136 between Millersdale Road in Hempfield and Hermine-West Newton Road in Sewickley Township.
The restrictions are expected to continue, as needed, through late October as contractor Tresco Paving works on an $8.1 million project, including road widening and resurfacing and drainage and guide rail upgrades.
Projects slated in Hempfield
The planned start date was delayed a week, until Monday, for a series of bridge projects and related lane restrictions — between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. — in Hempfield.
Crews from Mekis Construction are slated to replace seals and place epoxy overlays on bridges at Hempfield locations, according to the following schedule:
• Monday — Wendel Road, between Turnpike Street and Arona Road;
• Monday and Tuesday — Route 136, between Beeno Road/Ladysmith Road and Arona Road;
• Tuesday and Wednesday — Middletown Road, between Griffith and Arona roads;
• Wednesday and Thursday — Seanor Church Road, between Glenn Fox and Arona roads.
Also on Thursday, in Murrysville, bridge work is slated for School Road, between Priority and Mallard lanes.
It’s part of a $2.08 million bridge project that also includes minor repairs to 22 spans on 16 Westmoreland County routes. The work is scheduled for completion in October.
Flaggers will control traffic at the road and bridge locations.
