Latrobe hopes to move forward this summer with improvement of its three railroad underpasses.

City Council on June 8 will consider authorizing consultant Gibson-Thomas Engineering to prepare bid specifications for proposed upgrades where Jefferson, Ligonier and Alexandria streets pass underneath the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks.

The project calls for repairing cracked concrete sidewalks, installing handicapped-accessible curb ramps and improved LED lighting and cleaning and painting steel I-beams and railings.

“I anticipate in July or August work would begin on the underpasses,” borough manager Michael Gray told council Tuesday.”There’s a lot of coordination with this project. We have to be able to schedule this appropriately.”

He pointed out that painting couldn’t be completed at the same time concrete work is under way, while electrical work on the lights should be the final item.

The project is being funded with the help of a $100,000 grant from the state’s Multimodal Transportation Fund.
