Latrobe firefighters serve up haluski, rides, games at First Ward carnival
A week of games and amusement rides is set for 6 to 10 p.m. each day this week, Tuesday through Saturday, at the Latrobe Fire Department Carnival.
Patrons can come early, at 5 p.m., to get a taste of carnival fare when the food stand opens at the town’s First Ward ballfield, at Oak and Alexandria streets.
The menu will feature homemade haluski — savory noodles and cabbage — prepared by honorary department member Monica Gray. Her husband, Kevin, is assistant chief of the department’s Goodwill Hose Company No. 1, located right next to the ball field.
“She volunteered to make the haluski,” said department fire Chief John Brasile. “That’s one of our specialties.”
Firefighters also will serve up hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, and hot or sweet sausage.
This is the second year the carnival has been operated as a departmentwide event, not just an activity for Company No. 1.
“Last year was a huge success,” Brasile said.
