Tom the Turkey, mascot for the annual Latrobe Turkey Trot 5K race, takes a break next to the town’s statue of beloved native son Fred Rogers.

Racers who power through Latrobe’s Turkey Trot 5K course Thanksgiving morning can look forward to a treat after they cross the finish line.

The race, open to runners or walkers, begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 28 at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium.

Marking its 30th anniversary, the event includes an after party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nearby Sharky’s Cafe in Unity for race participants and guests. The restaurant also will be open to the public.

The race attracted about 130 participants in its first year. Now, “Our goal is around 1,000 people,” said Craig Shevchik, director of Greater Latrobe Parks and Recreation, which organizes the event.

Nov. 15 is the deadline to register for the race at a reduced entry fee of $25, including guaranteed receipt of an event shirt. The cost increases to $30 for registration on race day, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the stadium.

The fee is $10 for those 10 or younger.

Race entrants can vie for awards in eight age divisions.
