A man accused in a stabbing Wednesday at the Hostetter Hotel in Unity told state troopers that he wished the wounded person would have died, according to court papers.

William Kennet Evans Jr., 62, was arrested after the altercation with another man and charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and related offenses.

State police responded around 3:30 p.m. to the Murray Avenue establishment and learned from the wounded man that he and Evans had been drinking in Evans’ apartment when the suspect “went crazy all of a sudden,” according to court papers. Evans hit him in the head with something and then grabbed a knife and stabbed him in the torso, police said.

The wounded man grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed Evans with it.

Evans told investigators that he stabbed the man on purpose and tried to kill him, according to court papers. The wounded man was taken to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville and went into emergency surgery, police said. He also had a head contusion.

While at the scene, police said they took a 51-year-old Latrobe woman into custody after she interfered with police and first responders. Charges had not been filed against her.

Evans was being held on $200,000 bail at the Westmoreland County Prison. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A May 6 preliminary hearing is set.

Evans owes fines in two summary cases — a disorderly conduct charge from November and a harassment citation in March. Both incidents happened in Unity and were investigated by state police.
