Murrysville Medic One staff operates eight ambulances, four wheelchair vans, four squads, two all-terrain vehicles, seven trailers, an emergency support unit and two boats to support its dive team.
In addition, it’s not unusual to see Medic One members and their emergency support unit operating well outside their typical service area.
So, it’s important to have the most up-to-date equipment available, according to Medic One Spokesman Matt Stromberg, and a $304,000 investment in upgraded cardiac monitors is helping to do just that.
Medic One recently added Zoll X Series Advanced cardiac monitor-defibrillators to all of its service units, helping to bridge the gap between a home emergency and the hospital.
“These are really top-of-the-line monitors that can do a lot for patients when we’re on a cardiac call, of which we have many,” Stromberg said. “And these can be used with children as well as adults.”
The new monitors include real-time CPR feedback for emergency responders, reactionary airway monitoring, and Wi-Fi technology that allows Medic One to send real-time medical data to hospital doctors while a patient is being transported.
And, while a portion of the monitors’ cost was paid with grant funding, a significant portion also paid by Medic One. Stromberg said he hopes community members will consider subscribing to Medic One to help them continue to pursue the latest innovations in emergency medical care.
Medic One serves patients in Murrysville, Export, Washington Township and Upper Burrell. The service has earned particular recognition for its successful treatment of cardiac patients, receiving the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus Award three years in a row.
The award is presented to companies who meet high benchmarks in the treatment of heart attack patients. Fewer than 2% of EMS agencies across the country have received the award, according to the association.
