They won’t see Park Place or Boardwalk, but drivers in a Saturday, May 21 Monopoly-themed road rally through Westmoreland County might pass over some old Pennsylvania Railroad tracks.

“The course will head out on a winding route to the Bells Mills covered bridge in (Sewickley and South Huntingdon),” said Bruce Gezon of Murrysville.

Gezon, a member of the Sports Car Club of America’s Hall of Fame, has been designing rally courses for half a century. He is credited with 43 national rally championships since 1968.

“They’ll pass through Hunker and some other countryside towns,” he said. “And, at certain points in the route, they’ll be asked to look for signs along the right side of the road.”

That’s where the Monopoly board comes in. What would normally be properties on the game board are signs marked with a dollar amount. While drivers focus on directions, navigators will tally what signs they find and the correlating dollar amounts.

“I always look for interesting signs, and I run the course multiple times to make sure I haven’t missed anything,” Gezon said. “I’ve probably driven it six or seven times now, and I’ll drive it again the morning of the rally to make sure nothing’s disappeared or been taken down.”

The board features concepts like the “Black Cat,” where participants will seek out a government sign containing the letters C, A and T, and with letters darker than the background — like “Watch Children” written in black letters on a yellow sign. There is the reverse, the “White Cat,” a government sign with C, A and T with letters lighter than the background — such as a blue street sign with white lettering.

This will be the second Monopoly rally Gezon has organized. Last October, he partnered with the Westmoreland Land Trust to design a rally for one of its fundraisers.
