A former Allegheny County detective is accused of asking his son to lie about where an alleged crime happened, which resulted in a criminal case against him being dismissed last year, state police said in court papers.

Troopers said Raymond Bonacci, 58, of Murrysville, “encouraged and/or demanded” his son to say that Bonacci provided him with testosterone and Adderall in Allegheny County, not Westmoreland County. Bonacci was arraigned on intimidation, retaliation and related charges Tuesday evening and is free on $100,000 unsecured bail.

Bonacci was first charged with drug counts in July 2023. State police said the allegations arose during an interview process after the son applied for a job as a state trooper.

Investigators said when filing that original complaint that Bonacci admitted to injecting his then-juvenile son with testosterone and providing him with Adderall in 2019 in Murrysville to enhance his performance on the Franklin Regional High School football team, according to court documents. Bonacci was formerly a police officer and a detective with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.

In the complaint filed this week, state police said Bonacci urged his son to lie about where the crime happened after those drug counts were filed. The son told investigators that he feared being cut out of his family and being assaulted by his father, according to court papers.

“These reasons caused the victim to lie about where the crime occurred and ultimately led to the charges being dismissed,” police wrote in the complaint.

The drug case was dismissed during a Sept. 19 preliminary hearing in a Westmoreland County district court. Criminal charges must be filed in the county where a crime is alleged to have happened.

The two drug counts were refiled in August at the same district court after the case was referred to the state Attorney General’s Office. According to a grand jury presentment, Bonacci’s son said his father injected him with prescription testosterone and forced him to swallow Adderall pills 8-10 times during the fall of 2019 on days before football games.

Preliminary hearings in both matters are set for Tuesday. Bonacci’s attorney could not be reached.

Bonacci retired from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office in 2023. He pleaded guilty this year to two summary harassment citations connected to an incident in 2023 at an Export bar.

State police said Bonacci punched two women at Joey’s the Edge bar on Nov. 29 and one of them was knocked unconscious. He was ordered to pay $362 in fines and costs, according to court records.
