Cornerstone Ministries is finalizing plans for a mural on the side of a building in Jeannette, said Pastor Brandon Vieth.

Once leaders at the Murrysville church complete that process, young adult volunteers are going to get to work with paint brushes, hopefully next month.

It’s a way to help the community aesthetics and put out a positive message, Vieth said.

“We wanted to show that we were seeking to have God bless this area, this city,” he said.

The mural is being planned for the side of J&J Jewelers’ building, next to city-owned Elliot Group Amphitheater on Clay Avenue. The amphitheater and grassy lot is the site for regular events, including Concert and Food Truck Thursdays, and sits in the heart of Jeannette’s downtown.

Vieth said the idea came from York, where he lived before moving to the area about nine months ago. Murals were popular there and he often saw people photographing them.

“I was just thinking about it one day and thought it would be a cool project,” he said.

Jeff DePalma, owner of the jewelry store, said he was excited to work with the church.

“Why wouldn’t you put something like that on your wall?” he said. “It connects with everyone and that’s what you want here.”

Vieth said work is being done in-house to create artwork for the wall, which is estimated to be 5,400 square feet. Once everything is approved and the wall is cleaned and prepared, he envisions the image being projected onto it and young adults doing a sort of paint-by-numbers to bring the design to life.

“We’re still finalizing some of the details,” he said.

If it works out as planned, Vieth said he hopes the project can be replicated in other communities.

Hundreds of volunteers from Cornerstone Ministries have helped Jeannette in the past through an annual “Uncommon” community service weekend. Crews around town helped the city and its residents clean up abandoned properties, do repair work and complete interior projects.
