Murrysville officials and local businesses will team up to host a community-wide yard sale this fall with a few unique twists, including a crew that will come haul away the items that don’t sell.
“I think part of what stops people from doing neighborhood yard sales is the thought of, ‘Well gee, I’m going to lug everything out there and then if it doesn’t sell, lug it all back in,” said Shannon Koch, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway.
Koch reached out to Murrysville native Aaron Haney, owner of the Clean Up Krew in New Alexandria.
“We work together a lot through estate sales and auctions and things,” Koch said. “I shot him a text and Aaron said we should think about going to talk with the municipality about it.”
The result is an Oct. 12 “Clean-Out, Give-Back Community Yard Sale,” with a registration fee that will serve as a fundraiser for the Murrysville Parks and Recreation Foundation and its programs.
And Koch is going to make sure people know where the sales are.
“I’m going to put together a digital map showing all of the places where people are registered for the sale,” she said. “And we’ll have a QR code people can scan to bring up the map.”
Haney said he wanted to make things as easy as possible on participants.
“I’ve been in this business for a while, and when people do a yard sale, all the good stuff sells, and then they’re left with everything else they don’t want,” he said. “They either have to take it to a store like St. Vincent de Paul, or they have to put it back away.”
Instead, Clean Out Krew staff will pick up leftover yard sale items and take care of the donation process. Haney admitted that may also include some items that are not worth donating.
“We thought about that,” he said. “There are probably going to be things we have to dispose of, and maybe that’s at the landfill which is a cost for us, but that’s another reason we wanted to do this — to help the community.”
Haney said if the sale goes well, he’d like to continue doing it in the spring and fall each year.
“And if folks want a receipt in their name for things that end up being donated, we can make that happen as well,” he said.
The registration fee is $20 per home.
Koch said with some advance notice, organizers can even help with setup.
“If people are elderly, disabled or need help moving a larger item, we’re willing to to help if they let us know,” she said.
To register, go to MurrysvillePA recreation.com. Homes registered by Oct. 3 will be included on the digital map.
