Work continues on the East Pittsburgh Street bridge in Hempfield on Wednesday.

Nighttime single-lane restrictions and rolling traffic stoppages are slated to begin Thursday on a section of Route 30 in Hempfield as crews remove concrete and beams for replacement of the bridge that carries eastbound lanes of East Pittsburgh Street over the highway.

The restrictions are expected to affect both eastbound and westbound traffic through mid-May and will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Fridays through Sundays.

Charles J. Merlo is the contractor for the $7.6 million project that is underway and will replace the existing bridge with a new two-lane, single span concrete box beam bridge.

A recent inspection resulted in a poor rating for the bridge superstructure.

East Pittsburgh Street in the project area will be realigned and repaved.
