University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax will be among the speakers at a Saint Vincent College conference on “Science, Human Nature and Public Policy” April 5-6.
The 2019 Culture and Public Policy Conference, sponsored by the college’s Center for Political and Economic Thought, will focus on themes of human sexuality, marriage and the family.
Wax, Robert Mundheim professor at Penn Law, will speak on the topic “On the Margin: Out of the Mainstream in Liberal Societies” at 11:30 a.m. April 5 (Friday) at the Fred Rogers Center.
Wax has become a lightning rod for controversy in recent years for statements she has made about multiculturalism, affirmative action and free speech on American college campuses.
Wax stirred controversy last year for a 2017 YouTube interview with Brown University professor Glenn Loury in which she said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black student graduate in the top quarter of the class, and rarely, rarely in the top half.”
Penn Law Dean Ted Ruger subsequently said Wax would no longer teach mandatory courses to first-year law students.
She also was criticized for a 2017 essay she co-authored, “Paying the price for breakdown of the country’s bourgeois culture,” that was published in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Talks scheduled for April 6 (Saturday) include “Gender Trouble, Marriage Trouble?” by Mark Regnerus, of the University of Texas at Austin, “Darwinian Natural Right in the Supreme Court’s Gay Marriage Decision” by Larry Arnhart, of Northern Illinois University, and “Trapped in the Wrong Body? Dualism, Transgender Identity Claims, and the False Hope of Gender Reassignment Therapies” by Melissa Moschella, of Catholic University of America.
