PennDOT hopes to improve safety at key intersections along Route 30 in Westmoreland County by installing lighted signs to alert motorists about upcoming traffic signals.

The work by contractor Bruce Merrilees Electric Co. is expected to trigger single-lane restrictions on the highway between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays, beginning Monday, Dec. 12.

One of the locations slated to get an alert sign is the intersection of Route 30 with Robbins Station Road and Center Highway in North Huntingdon. A sign will be installed on either side of the intersection, alerting eastbound and westbound drivers.

“The signs will be internally illuminated,” said Melissa Maczko, a PennDOT safety press officer. “They will change to let you know when there is a ‘red’ signal ahead. The word ‘red’ will not be illuminated during green and yellow (traffic signal) conditions.”

Work on the involved traffic signals will be limited to coordinating them with the alert signs, Maczko said.

Another alert sign will be installed for westbound traffic approaching the intersection of Lewis Road in Unity.

At other locations on Route 30, flashing “signal ahead” alert signs will be replaced with updated “red signal ahead” signs.

As weather permits, the sign installations, and related traffic restrictions, are expected to continue at various locations along the highway through May.

PennDOT officials advised motorists to pay attention to flaggers and expect delays.

Youngwood traffic shift slated

Single-lane restrictions also are continuing on Fourth Street in Youngwood, which is under construction as part of the Route 119 corridor improvement project in the town.

Southbound traffic on Fourth Street will be shifted from the left lane to the right lane beginning on Thursday, Dec.15, according to PennDOT. That new traffic pattern is expected to continue into the spring.

The single-lane restriction will be in place between Stout Carpeting and Burton Avenue as paving continues on Fourth Street. There will be intermittent closures of side streets.
