Folks who have developed some horse sense are ready to share it with others Sunday during a season kickoff event for the Rolling Rock Hunt Pony Club.

Founded in 1954, the club has about 50 members. It is one of 13 groups that helped establish the United States Pony Clubs organization. Based in Ligonier Township, the club focuses on English riding. It originally was limited to youth members interested in developing equestrian skills. Now it is open to horse lovers of all ages and experience levels.

“We’re always looking for new members,” said Laurie Havrisko, one of three club officials who share district commissioner duties. “Some of our newest members really have never ridden a horse at all.”

While some simply enjoy taking part in trail rides, she said, “A lot of our members will compete in events at the local or regional level, and we have several members who have competed at the national level in Lexington, Ky.”

Members don’t have to own a horse but should have access to a suitable mount.

The public is welcome to attend Sunday’s event beginning at 1 p.m., when members of the Westmoreland/Fayette/Allegheny County Animal Rescue Team (CART) will offer a presentation including tips on horse safety.

The CART has trained volunteers with special equipment who respond to assist when 911 dispatchers receive a call for animal-related emergencies or disasters. It also has a pet pantry program, offering pet food and supplies to area owners who are experiencing financial distress because of a disaster.

After the presentation, those attending can learn more about the Pony Club. The club also will offer free pony rides. Those who want to ride should wear closed-toe shoes; riding helmets will be available.

On May 14, the club will offer a free introductory equestrian clinic, with mounted and unmounted lessons, for potential new youth members with limited or no riding experience. Participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

A club membership includes additional lessons and clinics and a summer camp, June 12-17. Members learn about horse care and grooming and riding gear, Havrisko said.
